Nihimental

A nihimental.
Whatever stands before you seems to lack depth, standing in sharp contrast to the things around it. Its form, however, seems more gateway than substantial: you sense a deep, unending chill within its depths. Aside from the massive, needle-like claws at the ends of what passes for its arms, the only feature this thing possesses is a simple white mask, with two eye-holes that are devoid of life.

A nihimental is an expression of the force of the Void, a mobile gateway into the Void itself. While such creatures do not occur naturally, they arise rapidly around regions through which the Void has managed to manifest itself: if a tear in reality to the Void is made, nihimentals are sure to follow.

Unlike other force elementals, nihimentals do not possess independent existence - they are not so much independent creatures as they are mobile Void rifts made possible by a larger, immobile one. As such, groups of nihimentals will coordinate with each other without the need for communication; being, in essence, the same creature, a given nihimental will "remember" what a previous nihimental did and interacted with, and what one nihimental knows, they all know.

Also unlike other force elementals, nihimentals are actively hostile towards anything and everything they encounter. They are especially hostile towards Divine- and Nature-aligned creatures, and will prefer to attack them over other targets. As with all Force elementals, a nihimental attacking a creature with an opposed Force alignment will not stop until either it or its target is dead.

The appearance of nihimentals is almost sure to be followed by the appearance of geomentals, expressions of Nature whose sole purpose in existing is to seek out and destroy the offending nihimentals, as well as attempt to repair any rifts in reality, if present.

Nihimentals come in the same relative sizes as other elementals: small, medium, large, huge, greater, and elder. The larger a given nihimental, the stronger its connection to the Void, and thus its size increases and its abilities become more dangerous.

Nihimentals do not speak, and do not indicate what - if any - languages they understand. However, they are responsive to creatures with a strong connection to the Void.

Nihimentals are one of the types of force elemental.

Combat

Nihimentals prefer to physically attack other creatures, using their massive needle-like claws to rend flesh and tear through metal. However, when necessary or appropriate, nihimentals can use nihils. Each nihimental is different, able to use different nihils. As they are already part of the Void itself, nihimentals are immune to the dangers of void debt; as such, they can use their Void abilities freely without fear of repercussion.

Lore

A character knows the following information with a successful Knowledge (The Void) or Knowledge (The Forces) check.

Knowledge (The Void)

  • DC 15: Nihimentals are bizarre elementals that are direct gateways to the Void itself. Each nihimental is relatively unique, and their abilities vary wildly.
  • DC 16: Nihimentals do not speak, but seem responsive to Void-aligned beings.
  • DC 17: Nihimentals are also Undead creatures, in addition to being an Elemental.
  • DC 18: Nihimentals are direct conduits to the Void itself, made possible by larger rifts to the Void.
  • DC 19: Nihimentals seem able to sense divine or nature, especially those who use these forces. They become immediately even more hostile when divine or nature is in their presence.
  • DC 20: It is understood that nihimentals, as an extension of the Void itself, are able to absorb shadow energy that they successfully resist.

Knowledge (The Forces)

  • DC 18: Nihimentals are bizarre elementals that are direct gateways to the Void itself. Each nihimental is relatively unique, and their abilities vary wildly.
  • DC 19: Unlike most force elementals, nihimentals are also Undead creatures, in addition to being an Elemental.
  • DC 20: The presence of a nihimental will almost certainly result in the formation of a geomental nearby, whose sole purpose is to seek out and destroy the offending nihimental.

Summoning a Nihimental

Some nihils are capable of bringing forth a nihimental.

Note that only void nihils are capable of producing a nihimental. Other forces with effects that are capable of summoning or otherwise resulting in the appearance of an elemental cannot produce a nihimental.
