The gnome sage can construct devices that replicate memetic functions. Constructing such a device follows all the normal rules for device construction. When you construct such a device, you choose how much memory it will function with, to a maximum of your class level; the device is treated as having a device level equal to one-half the memory it has. An akashic device can never function as though it were in your belief-space.
 +

 +
Each time the device is used, it produces the meme you put into the device, as though you were using that meme with the indicated memory. If the device has the [Module] descriptor, it uses an amount of capacitor equal to the amount of memory it functions with, squared. [Module] devices made from memes with a recharge of 6 require a High slot; recharge values of 5 or 4 require a Mid slot; and a recharge value of 3 requires a Low slot.
 +

 +
To ready an akashic device, you must allocate one belief-space towards it. If you do not ready devices, when you set your belief-space after a night's rest, you must allocate one belief-space towards an akashic device, or else it does not function that day. Akashic devices are not subject to normal meme recharge rules, but follow the rules for device charges as though they were normal devices, as though they were devices you had constructed as part of your existing student class.

The gnome sage can absorb the informational construct represented by technological effects. In essence, the gnome sage can learn a meme that is a precise copy of a technological device. Due to using the underlying principles of the device to directly modify the world on an informational level, rather than a physical one, this meme does not suffer from the ''error rate'' that devices normally suffer from.
 +

 +
Each time you activate the meme, it produces the device effect you put into it, as though you were using that device. The technological meme has ''recharge 5''; if the device effect had the [Module] descriptor and required a High slot, it instead has ''recharge 6''.

To place a recorded technology into one of your active meme slots, you must sacrifice one ''ingenuity surge'' for this purpose. You can use an insight surge for this purpose instead.

Gnome Sage

Vemmy, a gnome sage.
"History and science. With these, anything can be accomplished."

With one eye on the past and the other on the future, the gnome sage represents a fusion of gnomish pursuit. Able to take lessons directly from history and apply them to his current endeavors, he is able to push technology forward by studying what has come before.

Requirements

To qualify for the Gnome Sage prestige class, you must fulfill the following requirements.

Race: Gnome.

Force Alignment: Technology and Blue.

Skills: At least 8 ranks in two of the following skills - Knowledge (Technology), Repair, Techcraft. At least 8 ranks in two of the following skills - Knowledge (History), Knowledge (Memetics), Memecraft.

Special: You must be considered a memeticist and a student.

Game Rule Information

Gnome Sages have the following game statistics.

Force Alignment: Technology and Blue.

Force Resistances: SR 5 + level, PR 5 + level, TO 5 + level, CO 5 + level.

Abilities: Whatever ability scores were important to the gnome's prior classes are important to the gnome sage, as this prestige class is an extension of those classes.

Hit Die: d6.

Class Skills: All skills are class skills for the gnome sage.

Skill Points at Each Level: 6 + Int modifier.

Ethos: Any.

Class Features

All of the following are class features of the gnome sage.

Proficiencies

Gnome sages gain no new weapon or armor proficiencies.

Student Level

At the levels on the table above, the gnome sage gains new abilities as though he had also gained a level in any one student class he belonged to before he added the prestige class.

Memeticist Level

At the levels on the table above, the gnome sage gains new abilities as though he had also gained a level in any one memeticist class he belonged to before he added the prestige class.

Machine Lore

The gnome sage can use wild empathy on constructs, and gains trapfinding.

She can also use this ability on inanimate machines, such as vehicles; doing so grants the gnome sage an insight bonus to Disable Device, Repair, and Pilot checks pertaining to the item equal to 1 + one-half his class level. This use of this ability requires a full-round action to initiate, then can be maintained with a swift action each round; the duration automatically ends if the gnome sage loses physical contact with the machine. This ability only functions on items that are Technology-aligned.

She gains a +2 insight bonus on bestial lore and delve into blue checks pertaining to constructs, vehicles, machines, and other items that are Technology-aligned.

Memory of Progress

The gnome sage can use her memory to fuel her technological endeavors, using raw data from the world memory to improve their function.

After a night's rest, you can choose to allocate memory to various technologies. This memory is allocated you when determine your belief-space, and thus the memory becomes locked to these functions until you get a night's rest and can reset your belief-space.

  • Devices: Each point of memory allocated to devices grants you another device slot.
  • Medicine: Each point of memory allocated to medicine grants you a +1 insight bonus on Medicine checks.
  • Vehicles: Each point of memory allocated to a vehicle grants it additional capacitor equal to your class level. In addition, you can allocate two points of memory to your ability to manipulate the vehicle, gaining the benefits of a vehicle style ability you do not possess; you can gain vehicle style abilities from styles you do not normally have access to. You cannot use this ability to gain access to abilities that can only be used daily, such as redline or overclock.
Insight Surge

The gnome sage can experience a surge of insight, allowing them to apply principles of one discipline to another. You gain a number of insight surges each day equal to one-third your class level, rounded down.

You can spend an insight surge as though it were a memory surge for your memeticist class, or an ingenuity surge for your student class. Insight surges count as memory surges and ingenuity surges for purposes of feats that require them, and if you gain a feat or ability that would you grant you additional memory surges or ingenuity surges, you can instead choose to gain insight surges.

As a swift action, you can spend an insight surge to ignore a device's error rate.

As a swift action, you can spend an insight surge to take 20 on a Medicine check, even if you are in a situation in which you would not normally be able to do so.

As a standard action, you can spend an insight surge to restore an amount of capacitor to a vehicle equal to your class level squared.

Knowledge Transparency

The gnome sage has studied both world memory and technology in sufficient depth to come to a profound understanding: both alter the world in fundamental ways, but one works in the realm of the physical, while the other, informational. With this insight in hand, the gnome sage can translate the effects of one Force into the other.

Choose one of the following abilities, akashic device or record technology. Each ability can be selected only once.

▶ Akashic Device

The gnome sage can construct devices that replicate memetic functions. Constructing such a device follows all the normal rules for device construction. When you construct such a device, you choose how much memory it will function with, to a maximum of your class level; the device is treated as having a device level equal to one-half the memory it has. An akashic device can never function as though it were in your belief-space.

▶ Record Technology

The gnome sage can absorb the informational construct represented by technological effects. In essence, the gnome sage can learn a meme that is a precise copy of a technological device. Due to using the underlying principles of the device to directly modify the world on an informational level, rather than a physical one, this meme does not suffer from the error rate that devices normally suffer from.

Each time you activate the meme, it produces the device effect you put into it, as though you were using that device. The technological meme has recharge 5; if the device effect had the [Module] descriptor and required a High slot, it instead has recharge 6.

To place a recorded technology into one of your active meme slots, you must sacrifice one ingenuity surge for this purpose. You can use an insight surge for this purpose instead.

Omnichange

The gnome sage's revelation that the Blue and Technology are transparent gives way to an even greater understanding: not only are they transparent, but they can - with sufficient understanding of the world in both physical and informational terms - be readily interchanged with one another.

This ability has a number of effects.

  • You no longer keep separate active meme and device slots; instead, these are combined into a single total, from which both your active memes and readied devices draw.
  • When you ready devices, you can put a device into your belief-space. If you do, when you use its clutch, you can allocate memory to it. Instead of the device automatically malfunctioning at the end of the clutch effect, roll for malfunction as though it had an error rate of 20 minus the amount of memory you allocated to it. Memory allocated this way has recharge 6 once the duration of the device it is allocated to ends.
  • When you allocate active memes, you can sacrifice an ingenuity surge for one of your active memes. If you do, that meme's recharge is reduced by the total number of ingenuity surges you have. You cannot use insight surges for this purpose.

Feats

The following are a selection of feats that are relevant to gnome sages.

RACIAL SPECIALIZATION [General]
Your focus on the traditions and practices of your kind has allowed you to further unlock your own potential.
Prerequisites: Access to a talent list granted by a racial prestige class.
Benefit: You gain a talent from the talent list of one of your racial prestige classes.
