So you want to play a rogue, eh? Well, unfortunately for you, the concept of the rogue is an almighty mess, and I've decided that it has no business in my games.

The problem with rogues is that they occupy a number of niches, bundled up into one, and that makes me uncomfortable. The archetypal rogue, in my opinion, is not a damage-dealing class, but that's the way 3.5 and Pathfinder have made it. I don't care for it.

If you're interested in playing a rogue, there are a couple options.

  • You can play an explorer, who gets all the trap-finding and exploration skills of the rogue, but is not really a combatant class.
  • You can play an assassin, who gets all the combat stuff from the rogue, as well as a few other tricks of their own, but significantly less skills-oriented.
  • You can play a mediator, who gets all the social abilities of the rogue, and of the three, is definitely the least combat-oriented.

Alternatively, you can grab the adventurer and mix-and-match these elements to taste.
