Technomental

A technomental.
The creature before you is a mechanical beast, an engine roaring in its chest, gears and pistons moving in what seem to be a rather implausible fashion. Its construction seems haphazard, yet it is obviously engineered, perhaps by an intelligence unlike that possessed by any mortal. Oil drips from its jaws, and you get the sense of intelligence within its gleaming glass eyes.

A technomental is an expression of the force of Technology. Unlike most other force elementals, they do not spring forth from the ground or simply appear from the terrain; instead, they spring fully-formed from the hearts of complicated engines or scrapyards where the discarded remains of devices are cast aside. Technomentals are somewhat similar in nature to artilects.

Technomentals are normally neutral towards most beings they encounter. Should they encounter a creature with magical or psionic ability, they attack on sight and without remorse; a technomental attempting to slay a magic- or psionic-aligned creature will not stop until the creature or the technomental itself is dead.

Technomentals can be reasoned with, and can even be communicated with, unlike most force elementals. Technomentals that have arisen will sometimes go dormant if they stray too far from areas inundated with technology, going into a hibernation until sufficient bits of technology have gathered around them to reawaken them.

Technomentals come in the same relative sizes as other elementals: small, medium, large, huge, greater, and elder. The larger and older a given technomental, the stronger its connection to technology and more complicated and involved its internal mechanisms, and thus its size increases and its abilities become more dangerous.

Technomentals speak and understand Assembly. They typically only choose to communicate with Technology-aligned creatures; such conversations are at best terse, with the goals of individual technomentals varying.

Technomentals are one of the types of force elemental.

Combat

Technomentals prefer to physically attack other creatures, using their jaws, spines, and claws to attack offending creatures. However, when necessary or appropriate, technomentals can use devices. Each technomental is different, able to use different devices. As with all technology, the devices that are innate to a technomental are subject to device malfunction, though a technomental is able to repair its internal devices much as biological creatures naturally heal their wounds.

Lore

A character knows the following information with a successful Knowledge (Technology) or Knowledge (The Forces) check.

Knowledge (Technology)

  • DC 15: Technomentals are bizarre elementals that are manifestations of the force of Technology. Each nihimental is relatively unique, and their abilities vary wildly.
  • DC 16: Technomentals are able to communicate in Assembly, though they are often of relatively limited intelligence.
  • DC 17: Technomentals are also Construct creatures, in addition to being an Elemental.
  • DC 19: Technomentals seem able to sense magic or psionics, especially those who use these forces. They become immediately even more hostile when magic or psionics is in their presence.
  • DC 20: It is understood that technomentals, as a manifestation of the force of Technology, are able to absorb magnetic energy that they successfully resist.

Knowledge (The Forces)

  • DC 18: Technomentals are bizarre elementals that are manifestations of the force of Technology. Each technomental is relatively unique, and their abilities vary wildly.
  • DC 19: Unlike most force elementals, technomentals are also Construct creatures, in addition to being an Elemental.

Summoning a Technomental

Some devices are capable of bringing forth a technomental.

Note that only technological devices are capable of producing a technomental. Other forces with effects that are capable of summoning or otherwise resulting in the appearance of an elemental cannot produce a technomental.
