Gorons are most likely the property of Nintendo. Lots of the information here is relatively unique to Trinity, however.

The ecology of Ganymede is not always sensible to the minds of outsiders; on such a bleak, hellish landscape, it is hard to imagine life existing, much less thriving. Yet thrive it does, though in odd and peculiar ways. The gorons are one such peculiarity: creatures that certainly seem to have organic features, who grow and learn, yet feed solely on rocks and metals. Their digestive process is such that as they digest these supposedly-indigestible materials, they exhale water as a byproduct, forming - in effect - the foundation of the energy cycle of Ganymede.

It is not known how long the gorons have existed. They inhabit the complex network of lava tubes deep beneath the surface of Ganymede, which fill both with "normal" lava and phazon both; some theorize that the gorons were once not nearly as large as they are now, and begun life as significantly smaller creatures, but exposure to the radioactive lava significantly altered their genetics, resulting in massive frames.

As creatures whose skin is formed almost entirely of what is essentially living rock, gorons do not fear many of the hazards of Ganymede: they are quite resistant to fire, with elder gorons capable of bathing in magma; because they are formed of rock, they are always grounded, and thus not fear the persistent lightning storms on the surface; and like many other native species of Ganymede, they have developed a mild resistance to radiation.

However, as adapted as they are for Ganymede, they do not adapt well to other worlds. Gorons are incredibly dense, and sink easily in liquids less dense than the lava floes of their homeworld; while they exhale water vapor, they have come to have an almost instinctual fear of deep water, having no need of the liquid themselves. Their eyes are well-adapted to the tunnels of Ganymede and her perpetually-darkened skies, and thus exposure to light is uncomfortable, with bright light bordering on the painful. Those gorons who have traveled to Adnez have come to appreciate the innovations of the lunari, a race with similar difficulties with light, and gorons who are found abroad often sport enormous pairs of obsidian-tinted goggles.

Personality: Gorons tend to be friendly and boisterous, often respectful of strength and resilience, but some raised in more isolated communities can tend towards the xenophobic. Most prefer to live relatively simply, enjoying percussion instruments; given that they are able to eat minerals and metals, they do not have to expend much effort to survive, and thus tend to take their time, but this out of a sense of leisure rather than patience or planning.

Physical Description: Adult gorons are incredibly tall, with the average around 7 feet tall. Though most would expect a creature of such size to weigh a considerable amount, gorons are even heavier than would otherwise be expected, and some of the oldest gorons can weigh around a ton (2,000 lbs). However, gorons of adult age weigh roughly 700 to 800 lbs.

That said, gorons also have extreme sexual dimorphism, with goron females standing noticeably shorter than goron males, and also weighing significantly less.

Ethos: Gorons tend to be amiable folk, and as such typically have a significant Green tint to their ethos. Their culture is generally relatively simple, and thus their philosophy towards life reflects that; those gorons who decide to travel abroad may have stronger hints of Blue or Red in their ethics, but this is not a hard rule.

Goron Lands: Gorons live throughout Ganymede, with many small tribes of gorons scattered throughout the world. While they are somewhat family-oriented, gorons have no particularly strong affinity for any one location, as just about anywhere on their homeworld can support them.

Religion: Gorons tend to be Naturalists, though some tribes have a small set of Saints that they revere, in what is essentially ancestor-worship. Most gorons, however, put little thought into religion.

Language: Gorons speak Darunian, a relatively simple language. However, it has no written form, and gorons instead utilize a rough set of pictographs when writing. (In rules terminology, written Darunian can be understood by anyone who knows at least two Trade languages, but functions as though it were Basic in terms of communicating ideas.)

Names: Goron names are harsh, consisting of punctuated syllables, with the occasional rolling 'r.' Male names are often shorter than female names, as goron children are named using a component of their mother's: sons often have a shortened version, while daughters have an altered syllable.

Adventurers: Gorons, while simple, are a curious sort, and often decide to wander about on their own. Given that they need to expend little effort to acquire nutrition, gorons can wander away from home for many decades without concern, and as there are few creatures that can challenge a goron due to their size, many decide to do so at some point.

Goron Culture

The following is a rough overview of some of the highlights of goron culture.

  • Sexual Dimorphism: Goron males and females are significantly different not just physically, as per above, but also in terms of diet and societal function. Goron females are capable of consuming organic material, though doing so causes some mild physical discomfort. Such material is not digested in normal fashion, and goron females develop adipose deposits similar to those of normal humanoid species. At some point in the female's life, she experiences an instinctual need to consume vast quantities of organic matter; after doing so, she goes dormant, and gestates between one and three goron young, without the need for interaction with males. Of these young, at least one is guaranteed to be female. Genetic diversity is attained through external forces: the radiation that pervades Ganymede introduces a level of instability to the new gorons' genetics. Once the children are born, the mother stays with them for a short period, during which they feed on organic matter; once they mature to roughly a month, they are no longer capable of drawing reasonable sustenance from such material. It is unknown what would occur if a goron were to give birth outside of Ganymede's radiation.

Goron Racial Traits (t20v4)

  • +2 Strength, +2 Constitution, -2 Intelligence: Gorons are incredibly resilient creatures, and quite strong due to their mineral - rather than organic - composition, but have a somewhat diminished intellect due to their diet being primarily inorganic in nature.
  • Size: Medium.
  • Speed: 5 squares (25 feet).
  • Vision: Normal, darkvision.
  • Burrow: Gorons have a burrow speed of 20 feet. Gorons do not leave a tunnel when they burrow. Gorons can burrow through rock, but not metal.
  • Fire Resistance: Gorons have innate barrier (fire).
  • Lightning Resistance: Gorons have innate barrier (lightning).
  • Radiation Resistance: Gorons have innate barrier (radiation).
  • Light Blindness: Abrupt exposure to bright light blinds a goron for 1 round; on subsequent rounds, they are dazzled as long as they remain in the affected area.
  • Dense: Gorons are immensely heavy for their size, and are unable to swim. Gorons automatically fail any exploration checks made to traverse deep water.
  • Stone Body: Gorons have innate immunity (petrify). Effects that remove the petrify status instead inflict the dying status, which can only be removed if the goron gains the petrify status.
  • Lithovore: Gorons are lithovores, creatures that feed on rock, minerals, and metals. As such, so long as they have access to inorganic material, they are able to feed themselves; a goron requires an amount of inorganic material roughly equal to an item of Medium size each day. Gorons who are able to eat exhale enough liquid water for one Medium creature for one day, though it is in gaseous form. Goron females can also consume organic matter, but require three times as much as would normally be required for a creature her size, unless supplemented with inorganic material.
  • Rollout: As a full action, you can spend an action point to curl into a ball and roll with great speed. Move up to double your speed; during this movement, you can enter creatures' squares. At the end of your movement, make a physical attack against Reflex of all creatures whose space you entered. If you hit, you deal potency 3 damage, half bludgeoning, half earth, and push that creature 1 square. This ability has no effect on a miss.
