Shardminds are originally from late D&D 4e. They've been modified to better fit Trinity.

Shardminds

"We did not ask to exist, but we do. Let us make the best of it."

In CR 113, as one of his many displays of power, Kotrit Wayveri worked an epic magic, fulling intent upon completely and utterly dismantling the Force of Psionics. Unfortunately for the necromancer, the Forces are made of significantly sterner stuff than he had anticipated, and so his spell did not achieve its aim - however, the power behind the magic was such that it had an effect on the Force. No longer could the power of Psionics be tapped into by any with the will: instead, those who would become manifesters had to seek out the gems of the earth, into which the Force of Psionics had been trapped.

Some particularly dense concentrations of psionic power, entombed within large gemstones, became self-aware. Eventually gaining control over their crystalline prisons, they transformed these inert stones into something resembling bodies, and many managed to claw their way out of the stony depths and break out onto the surface. While at first alarming those individuals who they came into contact with, it became understood that these bizarre entities were sentient, and they were given the moniker "shardminds."

Shardmind Lands: Sites of power that are strongly aligned with Psionics have been known to spontaneously create new shardminds within gemstones close to the site: for this reason, many shardminds highly value these locations, and often where a Psionic site exists, a small enclave of shardminds will not be far off, as shardminds are unable to reproduce naturally. While this phenomenon was never observed prior to Kotrit's magic, it is believed that this is a permanent residual side effect, despite the fact that Psionics has long since been restored.
