Incarnate

Leah, iconic incarnate
"Hear me, and hear the voice of the Divine."

When the Gods were destroyed, their Divine essence was scattered throughout the planes and worlds of Trinity. While most of this energy was later recovered by the Saints and Lucavi and put to use in fashioning angels and demons, among other entities, not all of it could be recovered - some was irrevocably lost, or so it was believed. Some of this unrecoverable power found its way into the Soulfont, the plane on which souls themselves are fashioned through a strange and not-well-understood connection to the Divine.

There, some of the souls created found themselves conjoined with the faintest of sparks of Divine power, leftover vestiges of the Gods. Upon their appearance in the mortal realm, those who carried these souls found themselves capable of miraculous works, summoned forth by naught more than self-confidence and the will to change the world. Not all who have the potential for this power realize it, as it takes immense mental fortitude and self-conviction to pull forth this remnant power, but those who find themselves able to wield it can delve further into themselves and enhance their connection to the Divine, increasing their control over their powers and even expanding out into other domains of Divine control.

Ironically, while these individuals are quite capable of mustering Divine power, they themselves seem to almost never rise above the status of mortal: would-be Saints are praised for their works and deeds, an acknowledgement that they have risen above their mortal status and become something more. Incarnates, as they are known, are often already known to possess Divine power, and thus would-be petitioners instead focus on the cause of their abilities rather than on the individual themselves. While some incarnates are able to rise to the level of Sainthood (and thus, potentially, Lucavidom), they are significantly fewer than other callings.

Prayers

Incarnates are petitioners, which means that they make use of prayers, words of power reminiscent of the original tongue in which the Divine named all of creation, which are given power by the divine spark hidden within the soul of the incarnate.

Unlike most other Forces, the Divine has significant diversity in the powers that its followers can wield - divided into domains - and as such no reasonable summary of them can be given here. An incarnate begins play with access to two domains, and gains access to additional domains as she gains levels.

To gain access to this divine power, however, the incarnate must petition the Divine for it. The connection between herself, her Divine spark, and the Divine itself is tenuous at best: such shattered power is not easy to harness. Making a petition check requires 1 round, and the incarnate must make a petition check, which is equal to d20 + her petition bonus + her Bravery modifier; you make this roll as you declare your intent to make a petition, and if the result is not to your liking, you can cease the attempt and expend only a move action. If the result is at least a 15, you wrest Divine power out of your soul, granting you a number of blessings according to the table below.

Canticle 26

You can utter any prayer you know, of any grade you have access to, and for which you have at least one blessing; Divine power is infinitely malleable, and as such you can use it to utter any prayer you know. You must expend a blessing to utter a prayer of that grade or lower; expending a blessing is part of the utterance time of a prayer. If you gain a blessing for a prayer grade you cannot access, you cannot use prayers of that grade, but can still use that blessing for any lower grade, or to enhance your prayers with [Metaprayer] feats.

If you have blessings remaining from a previous petition, any petition attempt you make suffers a -2 penalty for each blessing you have remaining. Even if such a second petition is successful, you can have no more than three blessings for a given prayer grade at any one time, and no more than six blessings in total (if a petition would bring you over six after the limit of three per grade, you lose blessings from highest grade to lowest).

You can willingly discharge any blessings you have as a free action on your turn.

At any time, you can spend ten minutes in prayer and meditation, focusing your spiritual energy on attending to your Divine spark. If you do so, you are treated as having taken 20 on your petition check.

To use prayers, you must be able to speak clearly, and effects that modify your ability to speak languages or otherwise communicate clearly can disrupt your ability to use prayers.

The incarnate begins with three known prayers. She gains knowledge of additional prayers each level, as per the class table, above. At fourth level and every four levels after, she can trade out up to two prayers for new prayers from any domain she can access, of any grade she can access.

If you would gain access to new domains, you can choose to instead gain a bonus feat, which must be a feat for which you qualify; this replaces both domains you would gain. If you would gain access to new domains and already have access to twelve domains, you gain a bonus feat instead.

The priest's key ability for her divine attacks is her Charisma.

Divinity

As an incarnate, within your soul is a literal piece of the Divine, a claim few mortals can make. Not only does this spark give you access to Divine prayers, it also allows you to temporarily take on Divine aspects, empowering you with extraordinary Divine powers for a limited time.

As a move action, you can unleash the power of your Divine spark, temporarily transforming you into something akin to a divine being; the precise nature of your physical transformation is based upon the domains to which you can access (for instance, an incarnate with access to the Water and Storm domains would seem like a humanoid raging storm, while one with access to Fire and Metal might appear to be a flaming iron giant). The specifics of your appearance are up to you, and have no real game effect.

While in this transformation, you gain a number of benefits.

  • Your NI and VI both increase to 10 + your level.
  • You gain your Bravery modifier as a feat bonus to your divine attacks.
  • You can make use of your logos abilities (see below).

However, while in this transformation, you cannot make petition checks: you have tapped all of your Divine power and focused it into a few single moments, and have none more to spare.

At the beginning of each of your turns, you automatically lose a blessing of the lowest grade you currently have. If you cannot lose a blessing, you drop out of your transformation, and cannot petition again until you take a short rest.

Logos

As your understanding of your Divine nature grows, you gain powerful insights into the nature of Divinity and - indeed - creation itself. However, the abilities you glean from such understanding are lessons learned directly from the Divine itself, and thus are only accessible to you when you are at your strongest: you only gain the benefits of your logos abilities while under the effects of divinity (see above).

At each of the levels indicated on the class table, you can choose one ability from the following list. Unless otherwise specified, each ability can only be taken once.

▶ Domain Power

Choose a domain you can access. You can select one of its logos abilities.

You can select this option multiple times. Each time you do, select a new logos ability from a domain you can access.

▶ Immortal Is The Soul

While you are under the effects of divinity, you gain a feat bonus to defenses equal to the number of blessings you have.

▶ Power Begets Power

While you are under the effects of divinity, you gain a feat bonus to divine attacks equal to the number of blessings you have.

Incarnate Talent

Once you have attained tenth level, your self-mastery over yourself and the Divine spark within your soul has surpassed mere mortal limitations.

At each of the listed levels, you can select one of the following talents; unless otherwise stated, each talent can be taken only once.

▶ Demigod

You lose your creature type and become an elemental.

▶ Miracle

Prerequisites: Incarnate level 16th+

You gain knowledge of the miracle prayer.

▶ Portfolio Specialization

You gain another ability from the logos list of your choice.

You can take this talent multiple times.

▶ Revelation

You make your petition check as a standard action, rather than a 1 round action. If you do not like the result, you instead expend a brave action, rather than a move action. You can only petition once on each of your turns.

▶ Feat

The incarnate may gain a bonus feat in place of a talent.

Prayers

Because of how Domains work, it would simply be too much to list every Domain's prayer list here. This section lists the navigational template for domains.

Design Notes

So this class is a long time in coming.

Divine alt caster. Trick here is the ability to temporarily transform into a crazy-awesome thing with abilities pulled from domains.
