Shortly after arriving on Ganymede, some enterprising halflings decided that they wanted to return to their once-nomadic life on the new world. However, the dangerous environs of Ganymede presented many challenges, and some of their number believed that the traditional mount of choice - chocobos - would not suffice. To produce a suitable replacement, an engineering geneticist combined her talents with an akashic of some talent, and together they recovered the genetic material of the chocobo's ancient precursor. Combining this with genetic elements from a certain electric rodent, they produced a new breed of animal, a combination of ancient prowess and modern training techniques, and so the velectric was born.
However, toying with resequencing genetics rarely ends well, and the creatures turned out to be significantly more feral than its creators had hoped. The first batch of young rapidly escaped their enclosures - demonstrating a keen intelligence that apparently their chocobo descendants lacked - and sped off into the storm-filled night of Ganymede. Wild packs of these creatures now roam the countryside, ambivalent to many of the dangers of the stormy world, and have risen to the rank of apex predator, though thankfully their population has grown quite slowly over the years.
